The CIA found out that an apocalyptic event was going to take place in the next 48 hours after decrypting Page 94 and knew that Proteo was somehow involved, so they rushed to find him before the event took place. In Panama City, Proteo woke up when he heard a loud noise and tried to turn on his light, but it had been shut off and didn't work. He walked over to the window and noticed that someone had left it open and that it was banging against the wall, which was the source of the noise. When he turned around, an assassin stabbed him in the back and brutally murdered him.
When Sydney and Dixon found his body in Panama, his heart had been cut out and they were left clueless on the disaster.
